The Oaks

The Oaks

There are two lovely mature oaks on the site, one by the Bourne Brook (the Brook Oak, see map below) and one near the Mill Brook, which we call the Owl Oak, because owls have nested there in the past. At the moment the hole is occupied by stock doves (May 2021). We can see the Owl Oak from our top floor windows, in fact I can see it from my desk here. Yesterday I rushed out to take the photo below as the lighting was so great, I nearly missed an online meeting for work, but it was worth it…

The Owl Oak in May 2021

We measured the girth of the trunks in May 2021 and, using information from the Woodland Trust found that the estimated age of the Brook Oak is around 110 years (2.75 m) and the Owl Oak around 220 years (4.22 m). The Owl Oak is very hollow already and may be older.
